Computer Science

If you have an inquisitive and questioning mindset and may have completed the GCSE Computer Science course with a desire to understand the topics to a deeper level, then Computer Science is for you.

Subject Information

Computer Science is a fascinating subject which has now become one of the most important subjects that employers seek in many professions. It allows you to understand the underpinnings to all technology, how that has evolved over time, and how software and hardware continue to change to keep pace with the demands we place upon them

Course Details

Computer Science builds upon your programming and topic skills taught at GCSE level. We take those topics and delve into them at a higher level as well as presenting new ones, with a focus on understanding the ways in which computers work, whilst also developing analytical thinking skills to help you complete your own coding project.

Our modules are:

  • 01-Computer Systems
Within this module, students develop a wide breadth of understanding in the subject, ranging from the way all data is stored, to the implications of hardware production and the environment. Why are computers designed the way they are? How do programming environments help us code better? What are the different ways in which real software companies approach software design? How are databases used in real software applications and how has the internet been engineered to provide us with the experience we have every day?
  • 02-Algorithms and Programming
This module will help you think! You will develop skills which will impact on how you approach your programming, giving you a professional approach to writing code which focuses on ensuring efficiency, logic, structure and readability to your code; all skills that major software companies expect.
  • 03-Programming Project
Within this module, you will take those skills used in both earlier modules to allow you to document and develop your own program, in the same ways as is done in the software industry. You will decompose the problem, research the ways in which the problem has been previously approached, and develop a solution, ensuring testing and evaluation are carried out.

Subject Specific Entry Requirements

  • Grade 6 or above in GCSE Computer Science.
  • Grade 6 or above in GCSE Maths.

Where could Computer Science take me?

Computer Science is perfect for taking your studies further at degree level, with many topics providing a good basis of the modules taught at many universities. Computer Science will also show you have higher cognitive skills, allowing you to decompose and abstract problems in many jobs in technology
